Action 630 – Green Lantern vs Captain Atom, Black Canary saves the Deb, the Secret Six ends, Superman meets his followers, Speedy gets paranoid, and Blackhawk meets the president

act_630

Superman can lift an elephant, but looks none too pleased about that on the cover of Action 630.

act_630_001

Owsley, Bright and Tanghal have Green Lantern and Captain Atom go head to head for much of this chapter.

act_630_002

It’s a big, but enjoyable, battle.  Captain Atom comes out the winner, but it’d a moot point, as the alien promptly takes him down.

act_630_003

Wright, DuBurke and Marcos have Black Canary come to the rescue of the Deb at the start of this story.  With people thinking she is a murderer, she is finding it hard to secure a heroin dealer.  Canary saves her from some angry dealers, but the Deb gets away from Canary as well.

act_630_004

Some lovely art, and a far better story than the previous one, but still not quite up to par.

act_630_005

Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin bring the Secret Six saga to a conclusion in this issue, as the agency mounts their final attack on the group.

act_630_006

Carlo winds up getting killed in the battle, so the original team are all dead, as they were believed to be.

act_630_007

The new team disband at the end, although Mockingbird makes a final appearance, tagging a possible continuation.  There never would be one.

Instead, the name Secret Six would come to be applied to other groups, the first of which being a team of heroes in the Tangent Universe.

act_630_008

Clark Kent is brought to the secret temple of the Superman worshippers, as the Superman worshippers haters approach. Superman determines that the powers they believe come from him really are coming from somewhere far away.

act_630_009

Speedy continues his team-up story single-handedly, thanks to Wilkerson and Mandrake.

act_630_010

Although he contacts the police about the fire-bombing, it turns out the police are in on it.  The story does evoke some good paranoia, as he has no idea who to trust.

act_630_011

Blackhawk is summoned to see President Truman in this chapter, by Pasko, Burchett and Nyberg.  Recruited into the CIA, they are given the mission to escort a shipment of LSD from the European manufacturer.  At this point, it was considered a potential truth drug.

act_630_012

But the Nazis know what the CIA are up to, and the Nazi lady plans to disguise herself as an executive from the drug manufacturer.

Action 629 – Green Lantern holds it together, Black Canary sees the show, the Secret Six explained, Speedy moves in, and Blackhawk mourns

act_629

Mockingbird’s unmasking warrants the cover of Action 629.

act_629_001

Captain Atom finds the alien in this chapter, by Owsley, Bright and Tanghal.

act_629_002

Captain Atom and the alien have a very destructive, if inconclusive, battle.  It wears on Green Lantern, who is trying to hold together the building above the fight.  The fight does bring down the building, and Green Lantern moves in to confront Captain Atom.

act_629_003

Dinah Lance meets the murderer in this chapter, by Wright, DuBurke and Marcos.

act_629_004

Dinah is providing flowers for the production of Peter Pan that the actress is starring in.  She watches some of the rehearsal, and learns a bit about the woman.

act_629_005

Carlo brings the new Secret Six to his home, and explains the true history of the group to them, and Rafael, in this story by Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin.

act_629_006

August Durant formed the group during the Cold War, after uncovering some extreme actions within the US government agencies.  As the team got older, Durant took Carlo into his confidence, as they picked the members of the new team, and created the various devices for them.

act_629_007

But the evil agency (who is encircling the house as this all goes on) had got wind of these plans, and rigged the plane to crash.  Carlo happened to be in a sealed monitor room within the plane when it went down, which saved his life.

act_629_008

Speedy solos, although Wilkerson and Mandrake still label this story as a team-up with Nightwing.

act_629_009

Now in Northern Ireland, the story immerses itself in the troubles.

act_629_010

Pasko, Burchett and Nyberg take a long time getting this third story going.  Janos is still grieving over the girl from the last storyline.  You’d think they knew each other for more than a day or two.

act_629_011

Meanwhile, we see that the villains are leftover Nazis.

Action 628 – Green Lantern and Captain Atom disagree, a second murder pinned on the Deb, Speedy takes the train, Mockingbird revealed, and Blackhawk returns

act_628

Blackhawk has the cheap seat on the cover of Action 628.

act_628_001

Green Lantern and Captain Atom continue their team-up in this story, by Owsley, Bright and Tanghal.

act_628_002

Captain Atom has already referred the alien problem to the military, and Green Lantern is not pleased about that.  He has a better understanding of the creature, who had no malevolent intent.

act_628_003

They both rush off to deal with the damage he is causing.  Hal is using his ring to stabilize a collapsing apartment, holding it until it can be evacuated.

act_628_004

Captain Atom takes advantage of this, and flies off to confront and kill the alien himself.

act_628_005

Wright, DuBurke and Marcos ended the last chapter with Black Canary getting arrested.  She fares better at the station, where she is recognized, and her work appreciated.  She is not only released, but her pictures and prints are destroyed.

act_628_006

For the rest of this chapter we follow the second murder, of a drug dealer.  The actress comes to see him first, as a new customer, and poisons his drink.  The Deb is right behind, so once again she is believed to be the killer.

act_628_007

Wolfman, Wilkerson and Mandrake continue to label this as Nightwing and Speedy, even though the story now follows Roy and Lian, on the train, with Nightwing nowhere in sight.  Issue after issue I became less interested in the story, and increasingly annoyed at this situation.

act_628_008

There is a shady guy who runs into Roy on the train, and follows him through many chapters.

act_628_009

Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin continue to wind up the Secret Six saga, as they find the bodies of five of the six people from the plane crash.  But then, we sort of already knew that was the case.

act_628_010

More puzzling, after all the evidence that Durant created the group, is the revelation that Mockingbird is the magician, Carlo di Renzi.

act_628_012

Pasko, Burchett and Nyberg begin the third Blackhawk tale seconds after the first, with Janos still mooning over the corpse of the aviatrix from the previous story, as the team form their links with the fledgling CIA.

act_628_013

And we get a glimpse of the bad guys, German scientists doing what appear to be nasty experiments on humans.

Action 627- Green Lantern and Captain Atom, Mockingbird unmasks, Black Canary gets arrested, and Nightwing and Speedy begin

act_627

Nightwing gets the cover, as he (and Speedy) return to Action with two chapters in issue 627.

act_627_001

Owsley, Bright and Tanghal’s story becomes a team-up with Captain Atom, with the previous issue serving as a prologue.  Captain Atom comes across the alien, who has taken the form of an action movie hero.

act_627_002

It doesn’t go smoothly, and Captain Atom figures an attack means he is hostile.  Their battle draws Green Lantern, who suspects that this creature is related to the spaceship nearby.

act_627_003

Hal’s attempt to reach a peaceable conclusion are interpreted by Captain Atom as a diversion, and he blows up the alien’s ship.  Lantern is furious.  With his ship destroyed, the alien has nowhere to go.

act_627_004

Pasko, Springer and McLauhglin unmask Mockingbird, in a way, in this Secret Six chapter.  Mockingbird unmasks on front of Rafael, to prove that he could never harm the boy.  Of the six possible people who could be Mockingbird, this scene only makes sense if it is Carlo, his magician father.

act_627_005

But the rest of the story has the new Secret Six find proof that August Durant created the team.

act_627_006

Yeah, once again, Wright, DuBurke and Marcos have a problem with undynamic opening pages on the Black Canary series.

act_627_007

But the chapter is a good one.  Canary goes to hang with the street girls, and learns what there is to learn about the suspected killer, nicknamed the Deb, and her heroin addiction.  Canary helps the girls fight off some wanna be pimps, but gets picked up by the cops.

act_627_008

Michele Wolfman and Cherie Wilkerson have two chapters to start off the Nightwing and Speedy story in this issue, with art by Tom Mandrake.  Both heroes are billed this time, but it’s still more a Speedy story.

act_627_009

Dick is travelling with Roy as he heads to Ireland, his ancestral homeland, with Lian.  Roy uncovered some information about drug smuggling to Ireland, and was promptly fired by the CBI.  Nightwing and Speedy also run into drug smuggling on the ferry they take, and wind up in the Irish Sea.

act_627_010

They make it to land, and the story lets us know that “the troubles” will be a big part of this as well.

Action 626 – the dangers of duplication, Captain Marvel ends, Rafael gets free, Deadman ends, and Black Canary on the hunt

act_626

Green Lantern returns to Earth in Action 626, and one can actually perceive this cover as related to his story.  Loosely.

act_626_001

Owsley and Bright are joined by Romeo Tanghal as Hal heads back to Earth, and comes across an apparently hollow ship heading there as well.

act_626_002

But inside the ship was an energy being, which duplicates what is sees.  So it emerges from the ship in Green Lantern’s form.

act_626_003

The narration helps immensely.  The creature sees an explosive action film, and destroys everyone around him.  But there is no malice in this at all.  Simply mindless duplication.

act_626_004

Captain Marvel’s series comes to a close in this chapter, by Roy and Dann Thomas, Stasi and Magyar.

Captain Nazi proves not terribly inclined to follow the orders of the ones who created him, and is eager to join the poisoning of the reservoir.

act_626_005

There, he comes across Billy.  Recognizing him, he thinks Billy has been bound and gagged by his own enemies, and frees him.  Bad move.  Billy says the magic word, transforms into Captain Marvel, and then drops a hill on top of Captain Nazi. Poor guy doesn’t even make it to the end of the story.

act_626_006

An ending that announces an upcoming Shazam comic.  Which never came.  Captain Marvel would continue to appear sporadically, but would not get a series until the Power of Shazam reboot, which changed his origin, and removed this Billy Batson, and Captain Nazi, from continuity.

act_626_007

The action moves to Washington DC as Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin begin winding up the Secret Six.  The team has learned about the agency attacking them, and realize this is the same group Durant has been fighting, and that they brought down the plane with the original team.

act_626_008

Mockingbird is glad they no longer think he killed them.  Rafael manages to break out of his room.  he confronts Mockingbird, who is simply disappointed that he took so long to escape, being the son of a magician.

act_626_009

Deadman’s series also comes to a close in this issue, by Baron, Jones and DeZuniga.

act_626_010

It’s a body-hopping, knock-down drag out fight with Deadman, Madame Waxahachie and the evil voodoo twins.  With all possible bodies lost to them, they are reduced to living in rats.

Deadman returns, very shortly, in the Spectre crossover at the start of Invasion!

act_626_011

The body gets discovered as Wright, DuBurke and Marcos open this Black Canary installment.

act_626_012

We see the actress rejoicing in the news that the hooker is suspected, clarifying the guilty party.

act_626_013

And Dinah is certainly stylish as she goes out to look for the false lead.

Action 621 – Hal gets a new job, Wild Pup gets it in the shoulder, the Secret Six get on the case, Deadman gets stuck, and Weng Chan gets crazy

act_621

A nice Blackhawk cover on Action 621.

act_621_001

Hal Jordan begins a new job as a test pilots with the Gremlins in this story by Owsley, MD Bright and Jose Marzan.  The Gremlins were introduced a few weeks earlier in Green Lantern’s story in Secret Origins.

act_621_002

As the Green Lantern ring automatically protects one from injury, Hal does not feel he can accurately do his job with it on, and leaves it behind.

act_621_003

He almost regrets it, but the scene demonstrates his flying skills.

act_621_004

When he returns to get his ring, his battery explodes.

act_621_005

Wild Dog goes after the Night Slasher in this chapter, by Collins, Rockwell and Nyberg.  And though he does not realize it, Wild Pup is right behind him.

act_621_006

This time, Wild Pup does not help out, he just gets stabbed.

act_621_007

Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin continue with the Secret Six, as they begin their next mission, one involving academia.

act_621_008

Mockingbird no longer seems to be keeping such close tabs on the new group, as they begin to actively research their dead predecessors.

act_621_009

Deadman has a harder time of things than he expected, in this chapter by Baron, Jones and DeZuniga.

act_621_010

Deadman gets stuck in the body of LeGros, while the twins are possessed by the spirits of twin voodoo queens, long dead.  Madame Waxahachie knows what is going on, but is hard pressed to help.

act_621_011

Weng Chan gets the impressive stuff in this Pasko/Burchett chapter of Blackhawk.  He is being tortured, steamed to death slowly, along with the bulk of the team.

act_621_012

Janos is busy messing around with the aviatrix, as Weng risks a severely sliced face to free himself, and the rest of the group.

Action 620 – Arisia walks out, Wild Pup learns the secret, the Secret Six serve dinner, Deadman enters a voodoo priest, and Blackhawk saves the girl

act_620

The Secret Six get the cover of Action 620.

act_620_001

David, Howell and Starr end their run on Green Lantern with this issue. Hal manages to defeat many of the Freakshow, but Castle makes it away, running to his boss.

act_620_002

That turns out to be Lillian Hawkes, not Veronica.  She kills Castle, to complete her cover-up, and Hal is left believing Veronica is the real villain.  Sadly, these sisters never are seen again.  I’m pretty sure that in the long run, Lillian disposes of Veronica and takes over the company herself, and no one is any more suspicious of her than Hal.

act_620_003

Arisia walks out on Hal at the end of the tale, pursuing her modelling career.  She appears next not too long down the road, in an issue of New Guardians.

act_620_004

Collins, Rockwell and Nyberg put Wild Pup in the middle of the action in this Wild Dog story.

act_620_005

Once again the boy does prove himself helpful, but Wild Dog is not at all pleased that the kid is putting himself in such danger.  Wild Pup hides in the back of Wild Dog’s truck as he leaves, and learns his hero’s identity.

act_620_006

The Secret Six continue their mission about the contaminated meats in this Pasko, Springer and McLaughlin tale.  The team replace the food that is meant to be served at a banquet for the person running the meat processing, replacing it with his own products.

act_620_007

Meanwhile, in Washington, the powers that be are increasingly concerned that Mockingbird survived the plane crash.  The attacks on Technodyne apparently continue the same agenda that Mockingbird had years earlier.

act_620_008

Madame Waxahachie explains things to Deadman in this chapter, by Pasko, Jones and DeZuniga.  The rival voodoo priest, Anton LeGros, intends to sacrifice twin girls in order to gain more power.  Waxahachie is out to prevent this.

act_620_009

Deadman agrees to help, but has little success.  Even when he winds up in LeGros’ body, the twins turn on him and reveal his presence to the voodoo worshippers.

act_620_010

Pasko and Burchett reveal the truth behind Blackhawk’s mission in this story.

act_620_011

The Japanese had been working on a microwave generator, as powerful as an atomic bomb, but everything went missing at the end of the war.  The aviatrix has key information, which everyone wants.

Action 609 – Black Canary begins, Deadman takes over Reagan, Rafael gets caught, Wild Dog ends, and Oprah puts Hal on the hot seat

act_609

Black Canary gets the cover of Action 609, as her series launches.

act_609_001

Dinah Lance had been a regular supporting character in Green Arrow for the last couple of years, but had not been seen in costume since she left the Justice League.  She does burn her old costume during this story, by Sharon Wright, Randy DuBurke and Pablo Marcos, but does not put on her old one.

act_609_002

Sadly, neither the story nor the art on this serial are really good.  This first chapter is ok, as it largely just introduces Dinah and Oliver, and brings back Rita, a recovering addict who appeared in an issue of Green Arrow.

act_609_003

Another fun Deadman chapter, by Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga, as he attends an embassy ball in the body of the director of the CIA.

act_609_004

The Devil has followed Deadman out of the jar, and they wind up in the bodies of Reagan and Gorbachev, as Deadman tries to find out what the devil is up to.

act_609_005

Things get even crazier as they jump to Nancy Reagan and Raisa Gorbachev, who begin a cat fight in front of the crowd and media.

act_609_006

We get to see some of the personal life of one of the new Secret Six members in this Pasko and Spiegle chapter.  There is some drama with the guy and his ex-wife, as the rest of the team try to figure out what happened to Rafael.

act_609_007
Mockingbird has the answers, as he sends more of his people to capture Rafael.

act_609_008

Wild Dog’s first storyline comes to an end in this chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg.

act_609_009

Despite all of Layman’s actions, his people will not turn on him, and the only possible witness to his crimes in Wild Dog, who has no legal standing. So even though the villain gets defeated by the hero, he remains free and in power.

act_609_010

Well, at least until the woman he has seduced finds out that her son was one of the victims of his terrorists.

act_609_011

A madman wielding a sword is introduced at the top of the Green Lantern installment this month, by David, Smith and Bulanadi.

act_609_012

Hal is getting just toasted on the Oprah show.  Called crazy for not having fear, his courage is also then challenged, because of the ring that protects him from injury.  Arisia probably regrets coaxing him to go on the show.

act_609_013

And the show clearly has quite the effect on Hal, as he tosses his ring away at the end, to face the crazed killer with his bare hands.

Action 608 – Green Lantern on Oprah, Wild Dog in trouble, the Secret Six have trust issues, Deadman gets out of the jar, and Blackhawk ends

act_608

Green Lantern looks very serious on the cover of Action 608.

act_608_001

Peter David takes over the scripting on Green Lantern, with Tod Smith and Danny Bulanadi on art.

act_608_002

Hal is quite late for the taping, to Oprah’s dismay.  He gets stopped along the way, fighting crime.  He does make it, though, and begins to answer Oprah’s questions.  When he tells the audience that he was chosen to be a Green Lantern because he is without fear, they break out in laughter, to his and Arisia’s dismay.

act_608_003

Layman goes up another notch of evil in this Wild Dog chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg. Layman has implanted bombs in the suits of his men, to kill them before they can talk against him.

act_608_004

Layman also gets the follower he has seduced to provide him an alibi.

act_608_005
Meanwhile, Jack has been discovered to be friends with the reporter, and the investigating police officer.  Too dangerous to keep in the group, Jack is on the death list now.

act_608_006

Mockingbird tries to turn the Secret Six against Rafael, but the young man bolts before the team can decide who to believe, in this Pasko/Spiegle story.

act_608_007

As the Six debate, and decide that Rafael is more trustworthy than Mockingbird, we also see the set-up for their next mission, with contaminated pork products.

act_608_008

Deadman makes it to the top of the mountain, and out of the hell jar in this chapter of the Baron/Jurgens/DeZuniga epic.

act_608_009

Deadman does some body jumping to get out of the facility, and winds up in the body of the director of the CIA.  He has a big embassy function to attend that evening, which Deadman decides to attend.

act_608_010

Grell, Burchett and Marcos bring the first Blackhawk storyline to a close in this issue.

act_608_011

Massie gets killed by the Red Dragon, and Cynthia, really a nun, reveals that she came not for the treasure, but for a stolen religious artifact.

act_608_012

That doesn’t matter much to Red Dragon, who scrambles her air fleet to take down Janos.  But the other Blackhawks arrive to save the day.  Well, Andre and Chuck do.

Blackhawk returns for another story arc further down the road.

Action 605 – Green Lantern enslaved, Deadman under glass, Wild Dog is faking it, Rafael asks questions, and Blackhawk dines with Red Dragon

act_605

Deadman does not look happy about being the cover feature for Action 605.

act_605_001

Owsley and Kane are joined by Donald Simpson and Dick Giordano, both doing inks, as the Star Sapphire storyline comes to a sudden end.

act_605_002

We catch up with Hal Jordan, in chains on an alien world.

act_605_003

The Star Sapphire’s spree of evil gets gut short when she is taken by the same alien slaver who captured Hal.

act_605_004

Green Lantern’s ring returns to him, and between them, Hal and Carol are able to break free and return to Earth.  But then Star Sapphire disappears, and Hal has no idea what happened.  The reader has no idea what happened.  I’m not even sure the writer had any idea what happened, as this never gets directly resolved, and Star Sapphire does not return for years, not until Green Lantern’s next book, in the 90s.

act_605_005

Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga ship Deadman off to Washington DC in this chapter, sealed in the capsule, and visible to all.

act_605_006

Thanks to an easy-to-scare guard, and an unstable platform, Deadman breaks free of his prison.

act_605_007

But instead of getting out of there, he chooses to explore a bit, and finds an intriguing ancient jar, also under glass.  A voice in the jar invites him in, and though Deadman refuses, it turns out he doesn’t have a choice.

act_605_008

Nope, Wild Dog isn’t dead.  He’s just playing possum to lure the morality murderers closer, before getting up and shooting them.

act_605_009

With these two dead, Layman needs more men for his squad.  His background check on Jack Wheeler reveals that he is an ex-marine, so Jack is invited to join the group he has been fighting.

act_605_011

Marty Pasko and Dan Spiegle give the spotlight briefly to Rafael, the son of Carlo, one of the original members of the Secret Six.  Mockingbird had been providing a rare serum to keep Rafael alive, back in the day, and so Rafael was one of the very few people who even knew of the Secret Six.  Now, with his father dead, he wants to find out what Mockingbird knew, and how much he was involved.

act_605_012

The new team continue with their attack on the head of Technodyne. It goes very well.

act_605_013

At a press conference, they air the tape they made of the terrified boy confessing, and expose the needless deaths the company caused.

act_605_014

Grell, Burchett and Marcos make things look pretty dangerous for Blackhawk as this chapter begins.  The Red Dragon has him and Cynthia Hastings at her mercy.

act_605_015

And Andre is still far too busy to be part of the story.

act_605_016

The Red Dragon has heard of Blackhawk, and is intrigued that a famous war hero would so quickly have become a smuggler.  He offers to lend his skills to her organization, and the Dragon seem suitably impressed.
