There’s a big creative team on Action 548 (Sept. 83). The script is by Bob Rozakis and Paul Kupperberg, pencils by Curt Swan, and inks by Vince Colletta and Pablo Marcos. A new villain is introduced, who can either be referred to as Alexander the Great, or the Planeteer. With all that, you’d think this would be a stand-out issue.
Alexander sets up a bunch of devices in the atmosphere, altering the natural magnetism of Earth. He fully expects Superman to destroy these, as he gains power from each one destroyed.
Superman finds himself getting magnetized, making it harder to destroy the machines, but he prevails.
The Planeteer only confronts Superman once the last machine has been trashed, at the Sphinx. They begin a round the world battle, until Superman lures Alexander to the Magnetic North Pole, where his powers have no effect, and takes him down.
I would have skipped this story, except that Alexander returns the following year.
