Action 618 – Green Lantern vs the Freakshow, Blackhawk hits the air, Wild Dog goes to the press, Deadman returns, and Nightwing ends

act_618

Nightwing and Speedy in a classic Batman and Robin pose on the cover of Action 618.

act_618_001

Green Lantern battles the Freakshow in this chapter, by David, Howell and Starr.  It takes him a bit, but Hal gets the best of them, and then tracks them to Hawkes industries.

act_618_002

As the story ends, Hal meets both Lillian and Veronica Hawkes.

act_618_003

Janos and Frederikson go from fighting over Lady Blackhawk to laughing at her in a very real, if very male, opening to this Blackhawk chapter, by Pasko and Burchett.

act_618_004

The team take little time to fly to the right place, landing at the plantation where they aviatrix is being held.

act_618_005

Wild Dog turns to the press for help about Wild Pup in this chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg.

act_618_006

He pretty much begs the tv reporter to not heroize Wild Pup, or even him, trying to explain how dangerous this is for the kid.  The reporter is far less concerned about the boy’s safety than she might be.

act_618_007

Wild Dog takes a spare minute to capture a serial killer.

act_618_008

Deadman returns, but the series takes on a very different feel as Kelly Jones joins Mike Baron and Tony DeZuniga.

act_618_009

This storyline deals with rival voodoo priests.  Deadman encounters a nasty one in this story, who is able to see him.

act_618_010

Nightwing and Speedy have their team-up come to a close with this story, by Wolfman, Patton and Poston.  Dick brings Lian to meet Roy, recuperating in the hospital.  Roy admits that there never was a CBI mission, he was going after Cheshire to get Lian all along. He wanted Dick’s help, but couldn’t admit the read reasons.

act_618_011

Nightwing’s actions in this final chapter almost merit calling it a solo series, as he also takes down Cheshire single-handed.

act_618_012

And it’s nice to see Dick and Starfire together at the end.

Nightwing’s series would return.  This first run was heavily criticized for being more of a Speedy story than a Nightwing one, but the next would be even worse for that.

Action 617 – Green Lantern has relationship problems, Fredrikson shows up, Wild Pup isn’t wanted, Superman loses his man, the Phantom Stranger and channelling, and Cheshire loses custody

act_617

Superman streamlines across the cover of Action 617.

act_617_001

David, Howell and Starr continue the Hawkes storyline in this issue, but open as a rift grows in the relationship between Hal and Arisia.

act_617_002

She may look like an adult, but Arisia is really a child, who used her ring to rapidly age her body.  So it’s not surprising when her behaviour tends towards childishness.

act_617_003

The Freakshow lays a trap for Green Lantern, with a pyrokinetic woman pretending to be endangered by the flames.

act_617_004

Castle is now wearing a costume, instead of jogging gear.  Not a bad assortment of enemies.

act_617_005

Pasko and Burchett get the team together in this chapter of Blackhawk.

act_617_006

Although the mission itself, to rescue the downed aviatrix, is not that appealing, the down payment is.

act_617_007

We do know that the woman is being held captive by a plantation owner, and is being tortured for information.

act_617_008

Frederkison shows up, and Janos thinks he is responsible for Lady Blackhawk’s loss of an eye, as they had once been a couple.  He’s wrong, but the two men fight anyway.

act_617_009

Wild Dog meets his acolyte in this chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg.

act_617_010

The boy does prove useful, but Wild Dog is not in any way pleased by his help, and wants nothing to do with the boy.

act_617_011

People keep trying to kill the Superman worshipper, and Superman has been dealing with those men.  He is none too pleased to discover his worshipper is not where he is supposed to be.

Yes, seriously, that is all that has happened since my last entry on this Stern, Swan and Anderson strip.

act_617_012

Kupperberg is joined by Joe Orlando and Fred Carillo on this Phantom Stranger story, which deals with channelling, the 80s fad in which psychics would get possessed by a spirit from a past life.

act_617_013

The medium actually manages to evoke an Atlantean warlord, who runs wild in the streets.

act_617_014

The Stranger manages to convince the warrior that he is in the wrong time, calm him down and send him back.

act_617_015

The story has a nicely cynical ending, the psychic has learned nothing from the events, and simply intends to exploit it for her own benefit.

act_617_016

Wolfman, Patton and Poston continue with the Nightwing an Speedy tale.  Nightwing gets the best of Cheshire in their pub fight, and the assassin takes off

act_617_017

Cheshire returns home to find Roy captive.  She is about to kill him when Nightwing bursts in for another round.

act_617_018

Cheshire flees, rather than get caught, but in doing so she leaves Lian behind, and Roy winds up with his daughter for the first time.

Action 616 – Green Lantern breaks out, Blackhawk learns the mission, Wild Pup gets a costume, Nightwing vs Cheshire, and Black Canary ends

act_616

Blackhawk has the cover for Action 616, but seems a bit too busy to face the audience.

act_616_001

David, Howell and Starr give the Green Lantern Corps a hallucinatory cameo as the story opens, with Hal trapped inside a yellow safe.

act_616_002

He scrapes off enough paint with the edge of his ring to be able to get a beam through, and attack it from the outside.  Arisia is upset at how useless she feels in the situation.

act_616_003

We are introduced to Lillian Hawkes in this issue, the more demure sister, bossed around by Veronica.

act_616_004

We see the Freakshow, now with another member.  Siphon, who had appeared in the previous issue alongside Castle, is finally named.  Their boss sends them after Green Lantern.

act_616_005

Pasko and Burchett assemble the team in this Blackhawk chapter, as Chuck and Andre find Lady Blackhawk is now on the crew.

act_616_006

They are still awaiting Weng Chan, the former Chop-Chop.

act_616_007

Leslie explains the mission to Janos, to hunt for his wife, an aviatrix alongside Amelia Earhart, who vanished around Sumatra.

act_616_008

Collins, Beatty and Nyberg continue with the story of Wild Dog’s fan.

act_616_009

The boy puts together a Wild Dog outfit of his own, and goes out at night, searching for his hero.

act_616_010

As Wild Dog winds up in a tense armed standoff, Wild Pup approaches, eager to get in on the action.

act_616_011

Wolfman, Patton and Poston open this Nightwing solo story with a great shot of Speedy on his own.  He has found Cheshire’s home, but she is not there, and he fights her mentor for nothing.

act_616_012

Cheshire is in London, following Nightwing, and attacks for the kill.

act_616_013

Wright, DuBurke and Marcos conclude the first Black Canary storyline.  It actually is comprehensible, but overly complex, and told in a far more confusing fashion than was needed.

act_616_014

The art just adds to the melancholy mood.  It doesn’t feel like much of a victory when the villain is dying of cancer.

Action 615 – Green Lantern at the trade show, Blackhawk and Wild Dog return, Nightwing suspects Speedy, and Black Canary finds a body

act_615

Is it the cover of Action 615?  Or an ad for a new Friday the 13th movie?

act_615_001
Peter David is joined by Richard Howell and Arne Starr as Hal begins a storyline centred on the Hawkes sisters.

act_615_002

Arisia is working a trade show, and Hal is wandering around, amusing himself.  Veronica Hawkes debuts, but we only see her briefly, and from behind.

act_615_003

Two new villains attack the trade show, part of a group called the Freak Show.  Castle has powers I really like, teleporting and exchanging places with someone else.

act_615_004

Castle is fairly skilled at using this to manipulate an opponent, and traps Green Lantern in a yellow vault.

act_615_005

Marty Paske and Rick Burchett bring Blackhawk back, as Janos runs into Natalie Reed, the former actress with communist affiliations, the Lady Blackhawk of this era.

act_615_006

Janos accepts a dangerous mission, simply because the person asking is named Leslie, and is really crushed when Leslie turns out to be a man.

act_615_007

Collins, Beatty and Nyberg bring back Wild Dog in this issue as well.  He shoots a lot of criminals in this story.

act_615_008

But the storyline itself will focus on a young boy who sees Wild Dog in action, and becomes his biggest fan.

act_615_009

Wolfman, Patton and Poston do give Nightwing some solo time in this story, as Roy Harper is off tracking Cheshire.  Dick finds out the CBI have not informed the proper channels about their operation in England.

act_615_010

We see the softer side of Cheshire, as she tends to Lian.

act_615_011

After Dick catches Speedy in a lie, he calls the New Teen Titans to speak to Danny Chase, who tells him Roy is no longer CBI.  Changeling gets a line, but Cyborg, Starfire and Raven are just seen.

act_615_012

Wright, DuBurke, and Marcos approach the end of the Black Canary storyline.  Isn’t that an exciting page to open the story on, so near to its climax?

act_615_013

Dinah finds a dead body at one point.  That’s mildly exciting.

Action 609 – Black Canary begins, Deadman takes over Reagan, Rafael gets caught, Wild Dog ends, and Oprah puts Hal on the hot seat

act_609

Black Canary gets the cover of Action 609, as her series launches.

act_609_001

Dinah Lance had been a regular supporting character in Green Arrow for the last couple of years, but had not been seen in costume since she left the Justice League.  She does burn her old costume during this story, by Sharon Wright, Randy DuBurke and Pablo Marcos, but does not put on her old one.

act_609_002

Sadly, neither the story nor the art on this serial are really good.  This first chapter is ok, as it largely just introduces Dinah and Oliver, and brings back Rita, a recovering addict who appeared in an issue of Green Arrow.

act_609_003

Another fun Deadman chapter, by Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga, as he attends an embassy ball in the body of the director of the CIA.

act_609_004

The Devil has followed Deadman out of the jar, and they wind up in the bodies of Reagan and Gorbachev, as Deadman tries to find out what the devil is up to.

act_609_005

Things get even crazier as they jump to Nancy Reagan and Raisa Gorbachev, who begin a cat fight in front of the crowd and media.

act_609_006

We get to see some of the personal life of one of the new Secret Six members in this Pasko and Spiegle chapter.  There is some drama with the guy and his ex-wife, as the rest of the team try to figure out what happened to Rafael.

act_609_007
Mockingbird has the answers, as he sends more of his people to capture Rafael.

act_609_008

Wild Dog’s first storyline comes to an end in this chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg.

act_609_009

Despite all of Layman’s actions, his people will not turn on him, and the only possible witness to his crimes in Wild Dog, who has no legal standing. So even though the villain gets defeated by the hero, he remains free and in power.

act_609_010

Well, at least until the woman he has seduced finds out that her son was one of the victims of his terrorists.

act_609_011

A madman wielding a sword is introduced at the top of the Green Lantern installment this month, by David, Smith and Bulanadi.

act_609_012

Hal is getting just toasted on the Oprah show.  Called crazy for not having fear, his courage is also then challenged, because of the ring that protects him from injury.  Arisia probably regrets coaxing him to go on the show.

act_609_013

And the show clearly has quite the effect on Hal, as he tosses his ring away at the end, to face the crazed killer with his bare hands.

Action 608 – Green Lantern on Oprah, Wild Dog in trouble, the Secret Six have trust issues, Deadman gets out of the jar, and Blackhawk ends

act_608

Green Lantern looks very serious on the cover of Action 608.

act_608_001

Peter David takes over the scripting on Green Lantern, with Tod Smith and Danny Bulanadi on art.

act_608_002

Hal is quite late for the taping, to Oprah’s dismay.  He gets stopped along the way, fighting crime.  He does make it, though, and begins to answer Oprah’s questions.  When he tells the audience that he was chosen to be a Green Lantern because he is without fear, they break out in laughter, to his and Arisia’s dismay.

act_608_003

Layman goes up another notch of evil in this Wild Dog chapter, by Collins, Beatty and Nyberg. Layman has implanted bombs in the suits of his men, to kill them before they can talk against him.

act_608_004

Layman also gets the follower he has seduced to provide him an alibi.

act_608_005
Meanwhile, Jack has been discovered to be friends with the reporter, and the investigating police officer.  Too dangerous to keep in the group, Jack is on the death list now.

act_608_006

Mockingbird tries to turn the Secret Six against Rafael, but the young man bolts before the team can decide who to believe, in this Pasko/Spiegle story.

act_608_007

As the Six debate, and decide that Rafael is more trustworthy than Mockingbird, we also see the set-up for their next mission, with contaminated pork products.

act_608_008

Deadman makes it to the top of the mountain, and out of the hell jar in this chapter of the Baron/Jurgens/DeZuniga epic.

act_608_009

Deadman does some body jumping to get out of the facility, and winds up in the body of the director of the CIA.  He has a big embassy function to attend that evening, which Deadman decides to attend.

act_608_010

Grell, Burchett and Marcos bring the first Blackhawk storyline to a close in this issue.

act_608_011

Massie gets killed by the Red Dragon, and Cynthia, really a nun, reveals that she came not for the treasure, but for a stolen religious artifact.

act_608_012

That doesn’t matter much to Red Dragon, who scrambles her air fleet to take down Janos.  But the other Blackhawks arrive to save the day.  Well, Andre and Chuck do.

Blackhawk returns for another story arc further down the road.

Action 607 – Hal can’t win, Deadman and the Senseis, Wild Dog has a friend, Rafael meets the new team, and the Red Dragon’s real treasure

act_607

A dramatic Secret Six cover on Action 607.

act_607_001

Owsley and Smith continue to give Hal Jordan a hard time.  Even sleeping in is a chore, now that Arisia has discovered daytime television.

act_607_002

Trying to be useful, Hal heads to the Middle East, and tries to stop fighting between the two sides, but his efforts are not appreciated.  He comes back home, distressed, and Arisia makes a joking suggestion that he go on Oprah to explain himself.  Hal thinks it’s a great idea.

act_607_003

Deadman and D.B. Cooper climb the mountain in hell in this chapter, by Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga.

act_607_004

This chapter gets a bit confusing.  Deadman encounters the Sensei, and though Cooper insists they should not talk, they do.  The Sensei informs him that Cooper is really the Sensei.  Deadman defeats both Senseis, tossing them off the mountain, and then finds another D.B. Cooper.  Which kind of lets one just ignore the confusing chapter and move on.

act_607_005

Wild Dog fights off the morality hit squad, as they try to blow up the newspaper print shop.  He succeeds, but the police are on the way.

act_607_006

The reporter, Lou, comes to take Wild Dog away from the site before the police arrive, and Jack discovers that his friend knows his secret identity.

act_607_007

Rafael invades the base of the new Secret Six.  He has to fight his way in, and winds up captured.  But seriously, what did he expect?  Pasko and Spiegle continue as the creative team.

act_607_008

Rafael informs them of who he is, and that his father, Carlo the magician, was one of the original Secret Six.  This is the first the new team learn of the old one, and of their deaths.  As the story end, Mockingbird contacts the new team, warning them against trusting Rafael.

act_607_009

The Blackhawk story, by Grell, Burchett and Marcos, has its penultimate chapter in this issue.

act_607_010

As Janos goes after the treasure, Cynthis goes after something else entirely, a statue.  Massie confronts her, and calls her “sister.”  Before that can be explained, Blackhawk shows up, and fights with Massie again.

act_607_011

Too much fighting, too much time.  Red Dragon knows something is up.

Action 606 – Hal has no friends, Rafael listens to Mockingbird, Deadman in hell, Superman worshipped, newspapers are evil, and Blackhawk in a cockfight

act_606

Superman gets the cover of Action 606, so that means I will update what is going on in his 2-page series this issue.

act_606_001
Owsley is joined by Tod Smith on the art as he searches for someone to share his troubles with.

act_606_002

Hal goes to visit John Stewart, in prison for the murder of Carol Ferris. Hal can do nothing to clear him, and John is still pissed about Katma Tui’s death.

act_606_003

Hal forces his way past Alfred and goes to see Bruce Wayne, but Batman, having recently lost Jason Todd, is not in a sociable mood.

act_606_004

Hal doesn’t even manage to see Clark Kent in person, as he is swamped with work.

act_606_005

Finally he turns to Green Arrow, who one would have expected Hal would have turned to first. But even Oliver Queen gives Hal the brush off.

act_606_006

Pasko and Spiegle show the Secret Six what happens when they try to learn anything about Mockingbird, or even more about their mission than they are meant to know, as Mockingbird turns off their devices again.

act_606_007

Meanwhile, Rafael has opened his father’s safe, and found a wristwatch.  It broadcasts Mockingbird’s messages, and Rafael learns that a new team was formed, and old team told they were going to train their successors.

act_606_008

Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga have a lot of fun in this chapter, as Deadman arrives in hell in a jar, pulled there by a creature who claims to be the devil.

act_606_009

I think that the man Deadman spots, who is stated as being still alive, is meant to be Nixon, but it’s not a great rendering.  On the other hand, the hell supermarket is really fun.

act_606_010

Deadman runs into D.B. Cooper, the infamous and never captured hijacker from the 70s.  He leads Deadman to a mountain, the only way out of hell.

act_606_015

So what’s been going on in all the Stern, Swan and Beatty Superman chapters that I have skipped?  Not a lot, frankly.  Superman has come to the aid of a man in danger, and rescues him.  The man worships Superman, thinking he is a god.  Lots more to come with these, but I’ll probably just update the story every time Superman makes the cover.

act_606_011

Collins, Beatty and Nyberg put one of Wild Dog’s best friends in danger, as he writes an article for his paper against Lyman and his moral crusaders.

act_606_012

The fact that the newspaper wrote against him is proof of their evil, immoral way, and Lyman sends his goon squad out to blow up the paper, but Wild Dog shows up.

act_606_013

Grell, Burchett and Marcos stage a fight for the alpha male status in Blackhawk, between Massie, the Red Dragon’s former lover, and Blackhawk.  Janos wins, and gets taken to the Dragon’s bedchamber as a reward.

act_606_014

We also discover that Cynthia Hastings is not who she claims to be, and that she and Massie have a past.

Action 605 – Green Lantern enslaved, Deadman under glass, Wild Dog is faking it, Rafael asks questions, and Blackhawk dines with Red Dragon

act_605

Deadman does not look happy about being the cover feature for Action 605.

act_605_001

Owsley and Kane are joined by Donald Simpson and Dick Giordano, both doing inks, as the Star Sapphire storyline comes to a sudden end.

act_605_002

We catch up with Hal Jordan, in chains on an alien world.

act_605_003

The Star Sapphire’s spree of evil gets gut short when she is taken by the same alien slaver who captured Hal.

act_605_004

Green Lantern’s ring returns to him, and between them, Hal and Carol are able to break free and return to Earth.  But then Star Sapphire disappears, and Hal has no idea what happened.  The reader has no idea what happened.  I’m not even sure the writer had any idea what happened, as this never gets directly resolved, and Star Sapphire does not return for years, not until Green Lantern’s next book, in the 90s.

act_605_005

Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga ship Deadman off to Washington DC in this chapter, sealed in the capsule, and visible to all.

act_605_006

Thanks to an easy-to-scare guard, and an unstable platform, Deadman breaks free of his prison.

act_605_007

But instead of getting out of there, he chooses to explore a bit, and finds an intriguing ancient jar, also under glass.  A voice in the jar invites him in, and though Deadman refuses, it turns out he doesn’t have a choice.

act_605_008

Nope, Wild Dog isn’t dead.  He’s just playing possum to lure the morality murderers closer, before getting up and shooting them.

act_605_009

With these two dead, Layman needs more men for his squad.  His background check on Jack Wheeler reveals that he is an ex-marine, so Jack is invited to join the group he has been fighting.

act_605_011

Marty Pasko and Dan Spiegle give the spotlight briefly to Rafael, the son of Carlo, one of the original members of the Secret Six.  Mockingbird had been providing a rare serum to keep Rafael alive, back in the day, and so Rafael was one of the very few people who even knew of the Secret Six.  Now, with his father dead, he wants to find out what Mockingbird knew, and how much he was involved.

act_605_012

The new team continue with their attack on the head of Technodyne. It goes very well.

act_605_013

At a press conference, they air the tape they made of the terrified boy confessing, and expose the needless deaths the company caused.

act_605_014

Grell, Burchett and Marcos make things look pretty dangerous for Blackhawk as this chapter begins.  The Red Dragon has him and Cynthia Hastings at her mercy.

act_605_015

And Andre is still far too busy to be part of the story.

act_605_016

The Red Dragon has heard of Blackhawk, and is intrigued that a famous war hero would so quickly have become a smuggler.  He offers to lend his skills to her organization, and the Dragon seem suitably impressed.

Action 604 – the murder of Carol Ferris, comic books are evil, becoming a movie monster, getting in the bottle and Andre’s busy

act_604

Wild Dog gets the cover of Action 604.  No comment.

act_604_001

Owsley and Kane put John Stewart on the hot seat in this story.  Because he was known as Green Lantern, he is implicated in the damage done by Hal Jordan during his fight with Star Sapphire.  As John is trying to explain, Hal’s ring suddenly lands on his finger, and puts him into costume.

act_604_002

Carol Ferris has shown up to testify, and John accuses her of killing his wife.  It then appears that John suffocates Carol in the middle of the courtroom, before dozens of witnesses.  But John knows he is not causing that.

act_604_003

Indeed, Carol is not dead, she just made it look that way, so now the police are after John.  What a bitch.

act_604_004

John sends the ring back to find Hal, but maybe shouldn’t have done that, as he then gets arrested.  On the other hand, Hal in in chains on an alien planet, so he needs it as well.

act_604_005

Collins, Beatty and Nyberg have the morality squad go after a comic book store in this one, blowing it up, and ensuring the hatred of all of the readers.

act_604_006

Wild Dog catches up with them as they attack a truck driver for carrying porn mags, among the many other things in his shipment.  Wild Dog gets shot.

He does not die, I’m sorry to say.  There is more of his series coming.

act_604_007

The Secret Six go after a teenage tech wizard, the president of Technodyne, in this chapter, by Pasko and Spiegle.  A few issues earlier, a small town was wiped out by the acid rain from a technodyne factory.

act_604_008

The boy they are going after lives in a pleasure palace, and is a huge fan of horror films.  The “attack” on the boy is also a diversion, as the company’s records are raided.

act_604_009

The boy is confronted by the killer from his favourite slasher series, and the Six get the information they need.  The new Six.  The bodies of the old Six have just been discovered…

act_604_010

Baron, Jurgens and DeZuniga begin this Deadman chapter with a bang, as the spaceship bursts out of the pyramid.

act_604_011

It just keeps flying up into space.  Deadman catches up and takes control of the terrified and confused CIA operative inside, but cannot figure out the controls.  He puts the man into a trance, and returns to Earth.

act_604_012

That doesn’t work so well for him, as the CIA chief has her super-weapon.

act_604_013

Now that she has Deadman bottled, I should probably start calling her by her name, Major Kasaba.

act_604_014

Blackhawk puts his plan into operation thanks to Grell, Burchett, and Marcos.  Janos Prohaska and Cynthia Hastings fly into the Red Dragon’s territory, and pretend the plane has sprung a leak.

act_604_015

Andre Blanc-Dumont gets brought into the series.  Or at least, an effort is made to do so.  He’ll be back when he is ready.

act_604_016

And we end as Blackhawk meets the Red Dragon.
